Stepping up youth engagement in the Arctic Council

Arctic youth is not just the future but also the present.

Late November 2019, Arctic Youth Network member Pétur Halldórsson met with Senior Arctic Officials in Hveragerði, Iceland to discuss how the Council can better facilitate youth involvement in Arctic affairs. The result was a fruitful discussion about AYN’s potential as an organization that can help bridge gaps and bring youth to the forefront of the action.

Though no concrete plans have been established, the Arctic Youth Network submitted a proposal to the Senior Arctic Officials for their review. Arctic Council delegates will meet again in Akureyri in March 2020. Until then, the Icelandic Chairmanship aims to look more closely at the AYN’s proposal and to continue the discussion on how youth can be stronger represented in the Arctic Council.
