“Research Ethics in Indigenous Studies” Webinar
On November 21st 2024, the AYIP Working Group hosted its first public event together with the Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen, Netherlands!
About the Webinar:
The aim of the Webinar was to explore the critical issue of research ethics in studies involving Indigenous peoples, with a focus on promoting respectful, inclusive, and collaborative approaches. Panelists discussed approaches to decolonial research methodology and examined how indigenous knowledge can be integrated into different types of research. Ultimately, the discussion aimed to revise actionable rules and guidelines for conducting ethical research that respects Indigenous rights, fosters equitable partnerships, and builds a foundation of ethical practice for the next generation of researchers.
Our speakers were:
- Sara Olsvig – Chair of Inuit Circumpolar Council;
- Jamal Shirley – Director of Research and Innovation, the Nunavut Research Institute;
- Varvara Korkina Williams– Kumandin scholar from Siberia, Arctic Innovation Fellow at the Institute of Arctic Studies, Project Manager at Indigenizing Arctic Research Project and Co-Chair on Research Priority Team on Sustainability within ICARP IV process; and
- Sean Desjardins – Assistant Professor at the Arctic Centre, University of Groningen
